About This Episode

Elizabeth Larrick’s Background

Elizabeth is a former litigator who ran her own law practice specializing in plaintiff personal injury cases for about five years. After winding down her practice, Elizabeth transitioned into helping lawyers with focus groups, witness preparation, and trial strategy. She found her passion in consulting work, particularly in assisting litigators and trial lawyers in preparing for court cases. Elizabeth's journey from practicing law to focusing on consulting work showcases her adaptability and willingness to pursue her true passion.

“I always had focus groups, I'd always done them myself. And they kind of started with a group of us getting together to do it to kind of cut costs," shares Elizabeth Larrick on You Are A Lawyer.

Elizabeth had an early involvement in conducting focus groups and experience in this area even before transitioning from practicing law to consulting. It showcases her expertise and dedication to honing her skills in focus groups, which ultimately led her to establish her consulting business.

Why Law School

Elizabeth Larrick chose to attend law school with a clear understanding of the diverse opportunities a law degree could offer. Elizabeth mentioned that when she decided to pursue law school, there were limited resources available to explore the various career paths available to lawyers. However, she recognized the value of the lawyer's training and brain in different fields beyond traditional legal practice. Elizabeth's decision to attend law school was driven by her realization that the legal training would equip her with a unique perspective and skill set that could be applied in various industries and roles.

"Every place needs a lawyer," reflects Elizabeth Larrick on Episode 148 of You Are a Lawyer.

Elizabeth's experience in law school and her subsequent career path reflect her passion for creativity and problem-solving. Despite facing challenges in the job market after graduating during the mortgage bust, Elizabeth remained determined to carve out her own path. She transitioned from practicing law to focusing on consulting work, particularly in the realm of focus groups and trial preparation. This shift allowed her to leverage her legal background while exploring her creative side. Elizabeth's journey exemplifies the adaptability and resilience required in the legal profession, as she navigated through different roles and ultimately found her niche in providing valuable consulting services to fellow litigators. As she aptly stated, "the sky's the limit," emphasizing the boundless opportunities available to individuals with a law degree.

What Can You Do with a Law Degree

Elizabeth emphasized that the skills and training acquired in law school can be applied in various fields, not just limited to practicing law. She highlighted the importance of having a lawyer's perspective and critical thinking in different industries, making a law degree a valuable asset in today's diverse job market.

“Every place needs that lawyer brain," reflects Elizabeth Larrick on Episode 148 of You Are a Lawyer.

By transitioning to helping lawyers with focus groups, witness prep, and trial strategy, Elizabeth exemplifies how legal expertise can be utilized in consulting roles to assist other legal professionals.

“You're going to get in and they're going to tell you like, here's, you know, get you really focused in and tunnel vision on like what lawyers do. But, you know, the world is, you know, every place needs a lawyer," reflects Elizabeth Larrick on Episode 148 of You Are a Lawyer.

This quote underscores the idea that a law degree can lead to diverse career paths beyond the traditional courtroom setting. Elizabeth's experience highlights the endless possibilities for individuals with a law degree to make an impact in various industries and roles.

Lawyer Side Hustles

Lawyer side hustles can offer a unique opportunity for legal professionals to explore their passions and diversify their income streams. Elizabeth Larrick, a former litigator turned consultant, shared her journey of transitioning from practicing law to running her own focus group business. She emphasized the importance of leveraging one's strengths and pursuing what one is passionate about, even if it means stepping away from traditional legal practice.

“I always had it there and it just kind of started to naturally grow. And the other side, you know, the practice of law was kind of not shrinking, but just not really growing either,” shares Elizabeth Larrick in Episode 148 of You Are a Lawyer.

Having a side business as a lawyer allows for personal and professional growth beyond the confines of traditional legal practice. Elizabeth's experience showcases how lawyers can utilize their legal training and expertise in various entrepreneurial ventures. By tapping into their unique skill set, lawyers can offer specialized services, such as consulting or niche legal services, to a targeted audience.
