About This Episode

Joshua Brumley’s Background

Joshua Brumley has a diverse background that has shaped his successful career as a lawyer. Starting his practice right out of law school, Joshua's entrepreneurial spirit led him to network extensively and gain experience in various areas of law, including family law, criminal defense, and business litigation. With a background in business and an MBA obtained during law school, Joshua's expertise in marketing has been instrumental in growing his law firm, Brumley Law Firm. His passion for helping people and dedication to providing quality legal services have set him apart in the legal industry.

“I've always been an entrepreneur and a bit of a terrible employee, I think," shares Joshua Brumley on You Are A Lawyer.

Joshua has always had an entrepreneurial mindset and drive to create his own path in the legal field. His willingness to take risks, learn from various experiences, and prioritize client satisfaction over financial gain have been key factors in his success as a lawyer. Joshua's commitment to continuous learning and building a strong network of like-minded attorneys showcases his dedication to personal and professional growth in the legal industry.

Why Law School

Joshua Brumley chose to attend law school after experiencing dissatisfaction in his previous job at the Social Security Administration. Feeling unfulfilled and frustrated with the lack of impact he could make in that role, Joshua decided to pursue a career in law to have a more meaningful and fulfilling career. His background in business and marketing also played a significant role in his decision to start his own law firm right out of law school, allowing him to leverage his skills to build a successful practice.

"Connect yourself with other attorneys who care about what they're doing, who are passionate about what they're doing, who are good at what they're doing, not just people who are just going to resolve a case and not press the gas and push for trial and go to court," reflects Joshua Brumley on Episode 140 of You Are a Lawyer.

Throughout his journey in law school and starting his own practice, Joshua learned the importance of networking and building a strong professional network. He emphasizes the value of connecting with like-minded attorneys who are passionate about their work and willing to share knowledge and resources. Joshua's advice to law students and young lawyers is to focus on building a network of supportive and knowledgeable individuals in the legal field.

What Can You Do with a Law Degree

Joshua emphasized the importance of building a network and connecting with like-minded individuals in the legal field. He highlighted the value of learning from other attorneys, sharing knowledge, and collaborating to expand one's reach and expertise. Additionally, Joshua mentioned the significance of being passionate about the work you do and finding fulfillment in your career. He emphasized the power of building a reputation based on genuine enthusiasm and dedication to your practice.

"Chasing your passion is the only way to live life. And if there's something that's making you happy, go chase that," expresses Joshua Brumley on You Are a Lawyer.

This encapsulates the essence of what you can do with a law degree – pursue your passion and find fulfillment in various areas of law or related fields. Whether it's specializing in personal injury law, exploring different practice areas, engaging in community service, or even venturing into entrepreneurial endeavors like owning a franchise, a law degree provides a solid foundation for diverse career paths. By leveraging your legal education, networking with professionals, and staying true to your passions, the possibilities for what you can achieve with a law degree are endless.

Lawyer Side Hustles

Side hustles can be a valuable addition to a lawyer's career, providing additional income and personal fulfillment. Joshua Brumley shared his experience of owning a Little Caesars franchise as a side hustle, highlighting the educational aspect of diversifying one's business ventures. He emphasized the importance of balancing a side business with a law career, acknowledging the challenges and rewards that come with such endeavors.

“I think that the first most important advice I have for all law students or young lawyers is build a network,” shares Joshua Brumley in Episode 140 of You Are a Lawyer.

Having a side business can also enhance a lawyer's marketing skills and network, as it provides opportunities to engage with different industries and individuals. By leveraging the experience gained from running a side hustle, lawyers can improve their business acumen and expand their professional connections. Joshua's advice to law students and young lawyers to build a network aligns with the idea of utilizing side hustles to create new relationships and opportunities. By actively engaging in diverse business ventures, lawyers can not only supplement their income but also enhance their overall skill set and reputation in the legal community.
