About This Episode

Brooke Salazar’s Background

Brooke Salazar is a first-generation lawyer and college graduate who has navigated a unique path in her professional journey. Growing up in a modest environment, she was instilled with the value of education by her family, particularly her grandmother, who emphasized to "get your education. No one can take that away from you." This mantra motivated Brooke to pursue higher education, leading her to Indiana University Bloomington at a young age. Despite facing challenges, including the pressure of being a first-generation professional, she has successfully built a career in law and compliance, where she passionately advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

“Sponsors have made my career. There is no way that I could have the amazing career that I do without sponsorship," shares Brooke Salazar on You Are A Lawyer.

Brooke's experiences have shaped her understanding of the importance of sponsorship and authentic connections in the legal field. She acknowledges that her success is largely due to the support of her sponsors. This recognition of the role of mentorship and community in her journey highlights her commitment to helping others navigate similar challenges, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. As she embarks on writing a book aimed at first-generation professionals, Brooke aims to share insights and strategies that can empower others to succeed in their careers.

Why Law School

Brooke Salazar's decision to attend law school was deeply influenced by her upbringing and the values instilled in her by her family. From a young age, she was inspired by civil rights lawyers and felt a strong desire to make an impact in the world. Despite this passion, Brooke initially pursued a career in HR for over a decade before returning to law school at the age of 35, driven by a persistent calling that she could no longer ignore.

"Get your education. No one can take that away from you," reflects Brooke Salazar on Episode 165 of You Are a Lawyer.

While reflecting on her law school experience, Brooke candidly acknowledged the challenges she faced, particularly the financial burden and the pressure of passing the bar exam. She noted the significant investment required for her legal education. This financial strain, coupled with the emotional toll of being a first-generation lawyer, shaped her perspective on the legal profession. Ultimately, Brooke's journey to law school was not just about personal ambition; it was also about breaking barriers and paving the way for others who share similar backgrounds and aspirations.

What Can You Do with a Law Degree

As Brooke Salazar highlighted in the podcast, one can pursue roles in compliance, human resources, or even start their own law firm. For instance, Brooke serves as the Senior Director of Compliance at Compliance Dashboard, where she assists HR professionals and benefit brokers with employee benefits compliance questions. This demonstrates that a law degree can be instrumental in navigating complex regulatory environments and providing valuable guidance to organizations, particularly in areas like diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

“I'm wildly blessed to have a position at Compliance Dashboard, where I'm the Senior Director of Compliance," emphasizes Brooke Salazar on Episode 165 of You Are a Lawyer.

Brooke states how a law degree can lead to impactful roles in compliance and employee benefits. Additionally, law graduates can pursue entrepreneurial ventures, as Brooke did with her own law firm, emphasizing the importance of building authentic connections and understanding the business side of law.

Lawyer Side Hustles

Lawyers increasingly seek side hustles to diversify their income and explore their passions outside of traditional legal practice. As Brooke Salazar highlighted in her conversation, many attorneys find fulfillment in leveraging their unique skills and experiences to create additional revenue streams. For instance, Brooke mentioned her own journey of running a law firm while also writing a book aimed at first-generation professionals. This dual focus not only allows her to share valuable insights but also helps her connect with a broader audience who may benefit from her experiences.

“I know I'm very good at building authentic connections. I'm very good at building a book of business because I really embraced authentic networking,” shares Brooke Salazar in Episode 165 of You Are a Lawyer.

Brooke emphasized the importance of authenticity in building a side business, underscoring the idea that successful side hustles for lawyers often stem from genuine relationships and a clear understanding of one's strengths. By engaging in side projects that resonate with their personal and professional values, lawyers can enhance their careers while also contributing positively to their communities.
