About This Episode

Olivia Ash’s Background

Olivia “Liv” Ash is a licensed attorney, health educator, author, and artist who has built a multifaceted career that bridges the gaps between creativity, connection, and professional advocacy. She is the founder of Liv Balanced, LLC, a platform that provides award-winning, research-driven strategies for managing loneliness and fostering well-being. Liv’s work is deeply rooted in her personal journey, including her experiences with a genetic disorder and chronic pain, which have shaped her compassionate and creative approach to life and work.

“I am me. I’m just me. And I have a toolbox of skill sets—one of them is being an attorney, an advocate. That’s where health resides in law—acknowledging all the parts that make us human and not siloing ourselves," shares Olivia Ash on You Are A Lawyer.

In addition to her legal work as a benefits compliance counsel, Liv is a galleried abstract artist and the author of Painting the Landscape of Loneliness. Her book combines research and personal stories to explore the impact of loneliness and provide actionable strategies for building meaningful connections. Liv’s vibrant art and heartfelt writing reflect her belief that creativity and vulnerability are essential tools for healing and connection.

Why Law School

Liv was drawn to law school by her desire to advocate for others and engage in complex problem-solving. With a background in health education and a passion for teaching, she recognized that legal training could complement her skills and open doors to new opportunities. However, she also understood that law school would require a deep personal commitment and transformation.

"It will require a part of you that you can’t get back, and you will change. Make sure you have a good community and support systems, because those are necessary to be the best lawyer you can be," reflects Olivia Ash on Episode 177 of You Are a Lawyer.

While law school challenged Liv to balance professional ambition with personal well-being, it also equipped her with tools that extend far beyond the courtroom. Her experiences reinforced the importance of creating a holistic approach to professional and personal growth, an ethos she now applies in her diverse career.

What Can You Do with a Law Degree

Liv views her law degree as a “Swiss Army knife,” a versatile toolkit that can be used in countless ways beyond traditional legal practice. From her role as a benefits compliance counsel to her work as a health educator, artist, and author, Liv demonstrates how the skills gained in law school—critical thinking, attention to detail, and advocacy—can be applied across industries and passions.

“You can do anything with your law degree. It’s a toolkit. It teaches you to see the world differently, and for that, I’m grateful," emphasizes Olivia Ash on Episode 177 of You Are a Lawyer.

Liv emphasizes that a legal education is not a singular path but a foundation for creative and meaningful pursuits. Whether using her skills to teach about well-being or to advocate through her art and writing, Liv inspires others to think broadly about the possibilities a law degree can offer.

Lawyer Side Hustles

Liv’s side hustles as a galleried abstract artist and author exemplify how lawyers can pursue creative passions while maintaining their professional careers. Her art, which is deeply personal and therapeutic, allows her to express emotions and explore themes of connection and isolation. Liv’s paintings are not only exhibited in galleries but also featured prominently in her projects, such as the cover of her book, Painting the Landscape of Loneliness.

“I love abstract artwork... I love the process of painting because it’s incredibly therapeutic” shares Olivia Ash in Episode 177 of You Are a Lawyer.

In addition to her artistic endeavors, Liv is a published author whose book explores the epidemic of loneliness and provides strategies for building meaningful connections. She draws from her personal experiences, research, and professional expertise to offer readers a roadmap to self-discovery and healing. Through her side hustles, Liv proves that lawyers can use their skills and passions to create meaningful work that extends far beyond the legal field.
