About This Episode

Alyssa Devine’s Background

Alyssa Devine's background is a testament to her journey of self-discovery and adaptability. Initially interested in becoming a veterinarian, she switched gears and pursued criminal justice before ultimately finding her passion in intellectual property law. Recognizing the close connection between business and intellectual property, Alyssa boldly decided to pursue a joint JD MBA program at Indiana University McKinley School of Law.

"I recognize the almost constant clash between the best business decision versus the best legal decision. My job is to make sure clients make informed decisions," reflects Alyssa Devine on You Are A Lawyer.

She embraced the challenges of balancing two different academic environments and emerged with a unique skill set that allows her to navigate the intersection of law and business effectively.

Why Law School

Shifts and discoveries marked Alyssa's journey to law school. Initially interested in becoming a veterinarian, Alyssa realized that her passion for organic chemistry was waning and began exploring other options. She eventually found herself drawn to criminal justice and became a federal prosecutor. However, as she learned more about the emotional toll of the job, Alyssa recognized that it wasn't the right fit for her long term. She discovered her interest in intellectual property and its close business connection through attending events and lectures in law school. This led her to pursue a joint JD MBA program, recognizing the importance of understanding law and business to excel in intellectual property.

"If you get that feeling, then, you know, figure out something different. Like don't just stay stuck in that cycle. You'll be very unhappy," shares Alyssa Devine on Episode 115 of You Are a Lawyer.

Alyssa understood that developing diverse skills and perspectives would allow her to serve her clients better and navigate the complex landscape of technology and law. Alyssa's journey highlights the importance of recognizing what is and isn't the right fit and being willing to make changes to find fulfillment and success.

What You Can Do With a Law Degree

As Alyssa Devine highlights in this podcast episode, law students and young lawyers have the opportunity to explore different areas of law and develop a vast network of connections. Alyssa advises law students to not only focus on the legal field but also to build relationships with business owners and professionals from other industries.

"Developing skills is always good, but also recognizing what is and is not the right fit is really, really important. If you get that feeling, then, you know, figure out something different. Like don't just stay stuck in that cycle. You'll be very unhappy," emphasizes Alyssa Devine, on this episode of You Are a Lawyer.

With a law degree, individuals can pursue careers in various fields, such as litigation, corporate law, intellectual property, entertainment law, and more. They can work in law firms, government agencies, non-profit organizations or even start their law firms or businesses. The key is to continuously learn and adapt to the changing landscape of the legal profession. With the right mindset and a willingness to explore different opportunities, individuals with a law degree can carve out successful and fulfilling careers in various fields.

"Don't get discouraged… We don't have the society where you go to work for a company for 30, 40 years. We can change jobs. That's acceptable. That's expected. And that's okay," explains Alyssa Devine on the You Are A Lawyer podcast.

As a business owner, Alyssa understands the importance of planning and building strong relationships. She advises law students and young lawyers to develop a vast network of connections within the legal field and other industries. Alyssa emphasizes the need to continuously learn and adapt, encouraging lawyers to explore different paths and find the right fit for their skills and interests.
