About This Episode

Christine Job's Background

Christine Job studied business as an undergrad but needed help figuring out where to use her experience. The economy was terrible in 2009, and Christine needed a job that utilized her new college degree. So Christine took a gap year before she attended law school in Miami. But life outside of law school significantly impacted Christine: Christine she fought for job opportunities, negotiated and split the summer interning in two roles, worked with an entrepreneurial incubator, and spent a few months with a startup. Not too bad for someone who didn't want to attend her law school graduation.

Why Law School

Initially interested in entertainment law, Christine Job decided early in law school that she would not practice law. There was no need to look at bar prep courses or consider bar exam fees; Christine was confident of her lack of excitement about becoming an attorney.

With Christine serving as the class president and the first student to walk at graduation, telling her classmates and family that she would not be sitting for a bar exam was not easy.

What Can You Do With a Law Degree?

As a 1L student, Christine began working as a business consultant and strategist. With her book knowledge from undergrad and advocacy skills from life, Christine met with young entrepreneurs. She helped them identify business models and deal with the stresses of entrepreneurship.

"There is a lot of psychology involved with incubators. I was like, wait, we are discussing your family and how your relationships affect your business as much as your business model," explained Christine Job in Episode 78 of the You Are A Lawyer podcast.

Lawyer Side Hustles

Christine Job believed in being professionally fulfilled and financially well. When she created a home in Valencia, Spain, Christine revived her business strategy and consultancy to encourage her professional fulfillment. Every day, Christine used her experience and passion for building a business abroad and assisting women of color in becoming entrepreneurs.

Part of being a successful at living abroad and as a business owner is knowng your number; what number do you need to earn to keep your world going around and alleviate stress and frustration. This number is the amount of money needed for housing, food, and fun because "no one wants to live abroad and be broke? Who would want to live like that?" shares Christine with a laugh.

If you live outside the United States and want to build a business abroad, contact Christine on her website, Christine Job.

"Black women need that you are worth the risk. You are worth the bet on yourself, and your heart's curiosities are worth exploring," shares Christine Job in Episode 78 of You Are A Lawyer.

In addition, Christine exercises her creativity as the host of the Flourish in the Foreign podcast. On this podcast, Christine speaks with women of color who live abroad and discusses their challenges, successes, and regularness (i.e., taking out the trash and buying groceries) internationally.

"I don't know where people get these ideas, but living abroad is the same as living at home. It's the same things… only in Spain," comments Christine Job on the Flourish in the Foreign podcast. This must-listen podcast is highly rated, building a cult following of listeners who dare to dream outside the United States of America.

Lawyers have Cool Interests

Christine Job is passionate about women of color being honest about what it means to work and live abroad. There are differences in work cultures, expectations, communication (even if you are fluent), and work cycles. Christine wants you to consider all these different aspects of working abroad without ruling out the opportunity to work for yourself.

"I love encouraging women of color to build a business because our skills are vast. You can build a business from the skills, knowledge, and things you've done, shares Christine Job.

Think about all your tasks and assignments, especially duties you should have been paid to do.
