About This Episode

Lauren Klein’s Background

Lauren Klein initially pursued a finance degree and interned at Merrill Lynch during the last financial crisis in 2009. However, due to the economic circumstances at the time, she decided to pivot towards law school. Lauren entered law school with an open mind, unsure of her career path, but eventually found her passion for tax law through a business associations class taught by a tax professor. This unexpected interest led her to pursue a Master's in Taxation at a top school in the country, showcasing her adaptability and willingness to explore new opportunities.

“I was always like, no, thank you. I want to stay at boutique firms and open my own firm one day. And that didn't change, but I got this opportunity that I just could not pass up," shares Lauren Klein on You Are A Lawyer.

Lauren has the ability to seize unexpected opportunities while staying true to her long-term goals. Her experience in transitioning from finance to law, exploring different areas of law, and ultimately starting her own coaching program and estate planning practice showcases her resilience, adaptability, and commitment to personal and professional growth.

Why Law School

Lauren chose to attend law school as a result of the financial crisis during her undergraduate years. With a degree in finance and an internship at Merrill Lynch, Lauren was advised to explore other career paths due to the economic climate. This led her to consider law school as a potential option.

"I was graduating with a finance degree interning at Merrill Lynch and figuring I would go into finance and everyone's like, you know what? This is probably not the best time to pursue a career in the financial space," reflects Lauren Klein on Episode 134 of You Are a Lawyer.

Throughout her journey in law school and subsequent career in big law, Lauren experienced challenges and realizations that shaped her perspective on the legal profession. As she reflected on her time in law school and the transition to a big law firm, Lauren recognized the importance of mindset and personal development in navigating the demands of the legal industry. She emphasized the need for individuals to be open to pivoting and evolving in their careers, highlighting the significance of self-awareness and alignment with personal values. Lauren's experience serves as a testament to the importance of introspection and adaptability in the legal field.

What Can You Do with a Law Degree

The possibilities with a law degree are endless. Lauren emphasized that young lawyers and law students should not feel limited by their legal education but rather empowered to pursue any path they desire. She highlighted the importance of self-reflection and goal-setting, encouraging individuals to envision their future selves and reverse engineer their actions to achieve those goals. Lauren's message resonates with the idea that a law degree provides a strong foundation that can be applied to various fields and endeavors, whether it be starting a business, investing in real estate, or exploring different career paths.

"The answer is anything. If you feel like you love the law and you want to stay and you're not happy with how it's currently working out, switch, switch areas, start your own firm, go to a different firm. If you want to practice law and do something else, cool. You can do that, too," expresses Lauren Klein on You Are a Lawyer.

Lauren encapsulates the essence of what one can do with a law degree – the freedom to choose one's path and the flexibility to pivot and evolve in one's career. It serves as a reminder that a law degree is not a limitation but a tool that can be utilized in a multitude of ways to create a fulfilling and successful career journey.
